This past weekend, my best friend Rachel and her family visited Boston from California. We met when we were assigned as random roommates for a semester abroad in Barcelona. We always say that we were destined to meet – we are so alike in some ways yet so different in others, and it just works! They say soulmates don’t have to be romantic, and I believe that wholeheartedly now. Even though we only spent four-and-a-half months together initially, we have stayed in touch regularly for the two-and-a-half years since we were abroad together. She’s visited me in Miami, I’ve visited her in L.A., and now she’s come to Boston.
On Saturday, we went on a Duck Tour – a New England tourist classic! Our tour guide put on this obnoxious, noticeably fake Boston accent, but I suppose it’s all part of the cheesy charm. The only other problem with the tour was that it was freezing – I think Massachusetts has forgotten what summer is supposed to feel like. Otherwise, it was fun and pretty informative. I learned a crucial new piece of information – that the Fairmont Copley Plaza in downtown Boston is the “Tipton Hotel” from the Suite Life of Zach and Cody! The American Revolution was cool and all, but London Tipton is a girl after my own heart.
After the tour, we ate at Snappy Sushi on Newbury Street so we could save some room for the famous Mike’s Pastry. Rachel and I split a peanut butter cannoli and a chocolate dipped cannoli. After all, our love of dessert is what bonded us in the first place while in Spain.
That night we went to the Red Sox game. My Californian friends were so cold that we stopped at Marshall’s and Nordstrom Rack to look for warmer clothes! I ended up layering a sweater, a trench coat, a knit infinity scarf, jeans and high top sneakers! I know it’s been a while since I’ve lived in New England full time, but this can’t be right for the end of May – can it?! Although I don’t know the first thing about baseball, I was perfectly content with a beer and a Fenway Frank. Good food and good friends – what more does a girl need? (Ok, maybe some sun.)
On Sunday, we drove up to Kennebunkport and grabbed some buttery, mayo-slathered lobster rolls. One of my dad’s favorite ice-breakers is to ask people what they would choose as their last meal if they were on death row. (He is not a shy guy, let me tell you.) I’ve always said I would like steamed clams as an appetizer, a lazy-man’s lobster with hot butter, followed by a chocolatey dessert. So you could say this weekend was pretty successful for me.
Next we headed to Freeport. I had never been so far up in Maine, and only knew Freeport for L.L.Bean. The town ended up being so cute and picturesque. Our hotel was a minute walk from the downtown area which had a bunch of outlets and cute restaurants. The next day we stopped for breakfast in Portland and then made our way to more outlets in Kittery. We only ended up going to Lululemon because we got so wrapped up there! I actually made my first Lulu purchase ever – I got a skort and two pairs of pants for a total of $80! I told you, I’m a professional bargain hunter.
Last night, back in Boston, Rachel and I met up with two of our friends from abroad. Fittingly, we went to the Barcelona Wine Bar and shared a couple pitchers of sangria. Got to love a walk down memory lane!
The weekend went by way too quickly, but I’m already looking forward to planning our next reunion.
I hope everyone had a wonderful, colorful weekend with the people they love! 🙂
